Art @ Bounty
This experience was culminated in an end of semester art gallery dubbed Proof of Purpose.
The Bounty Collegium is a proud recipient of the TeachArtsOhio grant by the Ohio Arts Council.
This grant offered us the ability to partner with renowned local artist Yusuf Lateef. Being a professional artist and professor at Bowling Green State University, he has brought tremendous value to our students experience at our school. With a class we coined as Dream Journal, Yusuf has transformed a university level curriculum into a K-12 style class where students change their perspectives of everyday objects by solving problems using the resources we have around us.
Yusuf Lateef
Yusuf Dubois Abdul Lateef is a visual artist and educator residing in Toledo, Ohio. Co-founder of Radiant City Arts and the Toledo Black Artist Coalition, his work explores ways in which fundamental principles of art hold spiritual implications and points of connection as tools for community building. As an educator, Yusuf has participated in the development of arts programming and creative, sustainable curricula for juvenile detention centers as well as public spaces for the last 10 years.
His studio practice is intuitively driven, and he believes his work is a type of "soul speak," communicating the performative nature of art and the activation of gratitude. Lateef employs paint, performance, and object making, preferring to use found items, and believes his work holds messages and is guided by a higher purpose.
With a Master's degree from Bowling Green State University in 2D studies and social engagement as art practice, Lateef explores the idea of art making as a vehicle for processing trauma, problem solving, and acts of prayer.
Lateef has participated in several collaborative projects in communities in Ohio, Michigan, Charlottesville VA, NewPort News, Va, Puebla, Mexico, and Bilbao and Toledo, Spain. Lateef is currently an adjunct instructor at Bowling Green State University School of Art. His focus is on 4D art and developing experiential learning programs.
